invisible cities
june 4 - july 16

Boston, June 4, 2010: Gallery Benoit is pleased to present Invisible Cities: Paper Constructions by Heidi Whitman. In this solo exhibition Whitman presents new dimensional work installed directly on the wall. The paper constructions are a continuation of Whitman’s ongoing series of mental maps, Brain Terrain. The structure of cities and the structure of the mind are conflated in these new paper constructions. Plans of ancient ruins and contemporary city grids are layered and edited throughout Whitman’s work. The process of repeating, adding, and subtracting invokes memory and absence. Shadows as well as vocabulary of structures — nets, spirals, ladders, cranes, bridges, spider webs — are integral to these delicate but resilient constructions. The title Invisible Cities refers to Italo Calvino's monumental tales of the same name. In Invisible Cities, Marco Polo tells Emperor Kublai Khan stories about his travels to many cities. The cities turn out to be just one densely layered city seen from many angles. This one city may exist only in the mind. Heidi Whitman is on the faculty of the School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has exhibited nationally and is featured in numerous collections and publications. Gallery Benoit is located at 450 Harrison Avenue, #63. For further information please contact audra@gallerybenoit.com or 617.309.7902.
